What is a TrustRank?

TrustRank is an algorithm created to distinguish between good and bad (spam) pages and to help search engines rank pages in search results. TrustRank determines the likelihood that pages are reliable (i.e., not spam).

TrustRank's method is based on the fact that good sites rarely link to bad ones.

Simply put: If Google considers your links and content trustworthy, they will pass through its filter. But if your TrustRank is low, these signals will be considered invalid and blocked.

It goes without saying that you want Google to see your trustworthy pages. Otherwise, your rankings will suffer.

How the TrustRank algorithm works

The purpose of internet search engines is to efficiently provide searchers with the highest quality information. To ensure this, they must be able to distinguish between trustworthy and untrustworthy websites.

Therefore, in 2004, Google introduced the TrustRank system to filter out spam pages. This algorithm evaluates the quality of websites based on credibility criteria and ensures that only accurate data appears in online search results.

Linking to «Seed» pages

As we know, your Trust Rank largely depends on the "seed" pages you link to. If you're still not convinced, read this report by Reboot Online, who supports this statement.

In the report, Reboot Online tested how content about a new product would rank across ten pages. A 300-word article about Phylandocic was published on each page. According to the report, the content across these ten pages shared the following common characteristics:

  • comparable structure and text length
  • Keyword positions at similar locations within the article
  • Identical number of keyword mentions
  • Shared equivalent code, but it looked slightly different due to CSS changes.
  • Five of the ten pages contained three outgoing links to Oxford University, Cambridge University and the Genome Research Institute

Linking to seed pages is likely important in numerous niches, such as business, science, and education. Outside of these niches, you should aim to link to reliable sources that provide relevant and useful information.

Basically, there is a group of highly trusted "seed sites", such as .govs, .edus, NYTimes.com etc. Google selects these pages itself and gives them a TrustRank of 10/10. Obviously, it's best to get links directly from these pages.

You can still gain some of this trust by getting links from pages that have links from seed pages.

Therefore, you should ALWAYS examine another page's link profile before taking the time to obtain a link from them.

Linking to "Seed" pages

Keep an eye on your bounce rate and dwell time.

The bounce rate is a metric that measures the percentage of people who land on a page of your website and leave without visiting any other pages. The dwell time, on the other hand, is the average time users spend on a page of your website.

If people like the content you create, they'll spend more time browsing it. In short, to make Google believe your site is trustworthy, you should keep the bounce rate to a minimum and the dwell time high.

Here are some tips that can help you improve your bounce rate and increase dwell time:

  • Optimize page load time. Make sure your website loads quickly.
  • Make sure that navigation on the page is easy.
  • Make sure your website is optimized for different devices.
  • Pay attention to readability: Make sure your content is easy to understand.
  • Include sources and references: People are more likely to stay on pages if the content is well-researched and accurate.
  • Use visual elements: Include relevant images. People don't like wordy articles or product pages where they can't see the offer.

To put it simply, when creating your website, you should pay attention to what your audience wants to achieve by visiting the site. If it's interesting to you, it might be worth publishing it on your website.
