Top level domain

A TLD, short for top-level domain, is the last part of a domain name – the part that comes after the last dot. The most common example is: .com . Com.«

What is a top-level domain (TLD)?

In the hierarchy of DNA (DOMain Nsoul SIn the context of the internet (the phone book of the internet), a top-level domain (TLD) represents the first step after the root zone. Put simply, a TLD is everything that follows the last dot of a domain name. For example, in the domain name "google.com", the TLD is ".com". Some other common TLDs are ".org", ".uk", and ".edu".

Top-level domains (TLDs) play a crucial role in the DNS lookup process. For all uncached queries, when users enter a domain name like "google.com" into their browser window, DNS resolvers begin the search by communicating with the TLD server. In this case, the TLD is ".com", so the resolver will contact the TLD DNS server, which will then provide it with the IP address of Google's originating server.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has authority over all top-level domains (TLDs) used on the internet and delegates responsibility for these TLDs to various organizations. For example, a US company called VeriSign operates all the ".com" and ".net" TLDs. Another purpose of TLDs is to facilitate the classification and communication of the purpose of domain names.

Each TLD will tell you something about the domain that precedes it:

  • '.com' is intended for commercial enterprises.
  • '.gov' is for US government agencies.
  • '.uk' is for domains from the United Kingdom.

TLDs themselves are also divided into several groups.

Are top-level domains important for SEO?

Yes, top-level domains are important for SEOHowever, keywords in your top-level domain do not improve rankings. In general, country-specific top-level domains (ccTLDs) tend to rank better in local search results than generic top-level domains (gTLDs).

Furthermore, some top-level domains (such as .xyz, .cn, or .biz) are associated with spam and malicious SEO tactics. These can negatively impact the trust and reliability of users visiting your site. While the weight, phrasing, and meaning of the words in the top-level domain are important, they are not the decisive factors in optimizing your website for search engines.

There are other aspects that are of greater importance when optimizing a website, such as the quality and relevance of the content, the use of keywords, and the interactivity of the website.

Best practices for selecting top-level domains

Best practices for selecting top-level domains

  • .com, .org or .net as a bulletproof solution

As a general rule of thumb, you should choose .com, .org, or .net as your top-level domain. According to Statista, these three were the most common TLDs in January 2022 and are sure to meet the expectations of all visitors.

  • Be careful with ccTLDs.

When getting creative with your top-level domain choice, be careful with ccTLDs. Some websites might choose a gTLD, which is actually a registered country code top-level domain. For example, at sbb.ch The «.ch» is technically the country-code top-level domain for Switzerland.

If the website is not targeted at this country, this can affect ranking factors or cause problems for your website. However, Google treats some ccTLDs (such as .io and .fm) as gTLDs because users and website owners perceive them as more general than country-specific.

  • Select ccTLDs for a specific country.

According to Google, ccTLDs strongly signal to users and search engines that your site is targeting a specific country. From an SEO perspective, ccTLDs offer a great opportunity to signal to Google the best target audience for your site.

How many top-level domains are there?

A top-level domain (TLD) is the part of a domain name that immediately follows the last dot symbol. It occupies the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System (DNS) of the internet.

For example, in app.ahrefs.com com is the top-level domain, ahrefs the second level, and app the third level.

Each top-level domain is managed by an independent organization under the direction of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

There are four types of top-level domains, including:

  1. Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are the most commonly used type of domain extension. They contain three or more characters and are open to registration. The three most common gTLDs are .com, .org, and .net. In 2011, ICANN changed the Domain Name System, expanding the original 22 gTLDs to over 1.200. This naming system update enabled innovative generic extensions such as .agency or even .beer.
  2. Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) These are specific to certain countries or regions and usually identify the official internet address of that country or region. For example, .ch is the ccTLD for Switzerland.
  3. Sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLD) These are top-level domains (TLDs) designated for specific purposes, such as education (.edu) or government organizations (.gov). To register these TLDs, certain requirements must usually be met.
  4. The category of Infrastructure top-level domains It comprises only one domain and is used exclusively for internet infrastructure purposes. The top-level domain name is .arpa, which stands for "Address and Routing Parameter Area".
