A Screaming Frog spider is a piece of software that crawls around on a website, collects data, and presents it to the spider's owners. Google has a whole fleet of these things to index the internet as completely as possible so that it can appear in search results.
Other search engines – from Yahoo and Bing to more exotic ones like Million Short – either use their own “search spiders” or pull data indexes from other entities that use spiders.
This particular spider is a desktop application that you can download and run on your local PC, regardless of the platform. It retrieves SEO-Data, including URL, metadata, schema categories and more.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Tool is a crawler with many useful functionalities. Its task is to scan websites, making it easier to later analyze their structure and the elements that influence SEO.
The tool helps to detect anomalies such as incorrect meta tags, duplicate content and headings, 404 errors, redirects and much more.
Screaming Frog collects data about the website and presents it in a sortable table that can be filtered by many different criteria – an interesting fact is that you can choose from over 40 different criteria.
The free version of the software, commonly known as "Frog," allows the analysis of 500 random URLs from a website. The paid version has no such limitations.
Among other things, it allows scanning of all subpages of a website, export and integration with external tools – Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
The annual fee for using all Screaming Frog functionalities is £149,00 (as of June 2020). The tool can be used by https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/ be downloaded.
Many factors play an important role in a website's search engine ranking, including keywords, backlinks, and a page structure that makes it easier for search engine bots to effectively crawl your website using the HTML code.
Indexing allows a website to appear in search results, and for this to happen, bots need to be able to crawl your website effectively. Finding an unindexed website is virtually impossible (unless there has been a recent indexing error), and it would be practically non-existent, as it cannot be found anywhere on the web.
Therefore, a page structure that enables efficient searching is an essential component of a successful on-page SEO strategy.
SEO professionals use various tools, such as the SEO tool Screaming Frog, to ensure that search engine bots can crawl and index websites. Screaming Frog is a web crawler that helps you check your website and provides insights into its performance.
One of the important functions of the Screaming Frog SEO tool is to check the matches of keywords in your dictionary with the words on your website to ensure that all relevant information can be captured by search engine bots.
Linguistics plays a crucial role here, as it's essential that the keywords on your website match the corresponding dictionary entries. Screaming Frog software can therefore help you improve the effectiveness of your on-page SEO strategy.
Screaming Frog software can help you perform the following tasks for your SEO efforts:
Most of the time, you can crawl websites using only Screaming Frog's basic tools. But as you explore the software, you'll discover other helpful features for crawling websites. Here are some of the other features you might have missed:
It is a fast and advanced SEO audit tool that not only scans your website for important on-page SEO elements (such as URL, page title, meta description, headings and more), but also pays attention to the HTML code and the grammar of your sentences.
Successful companies like Amazon, Disney, Google and Apple all use Screaming Frog to ensure their websites are optimally built for search engines.
Without this tool, you have to manually check every page on your website, and there's a high probability you'll miss small errors like a redirect, duplicate content, a meta update, and so on. Screaming Frog can crawl websites of all sizes for you, allowing you to easily check and optimize your entire site.
With the SEO Spider, you can even export the found on-page SEO elements to a spreadsheet, so that they can easily be used as a basis for SEO recommendations.
Since 2016, links have been one of the most important factors for Google ranking.
Broken links can impact your SEO by affecting dwell time, bounce rate, and link value, and suggesting that your website is old and outdated.
This refers to content within or across domains that matches or is similar to other content in the same language. This can lead to a poor user experience.
Title tags are important so that users know what content they will find on the page.
Missing title tags can affect search engine ranking and click-through rate on search engine results pages.
A sitemap is important because it helps search engines find pages on your website, crawl them, and understand the structure of your website.
Redirects should be used when you make changes to any of your URLs so that you can pass indexing and link signals from the old URLs to the new URLs.
An audit helps you identify the most significant issues impacting your organic search performance. Paid version only.
JavaScript crawling takes longer because all the resources have to be gathered to render each web page. Screaming Frog can render these web pages for you.
I assume you are using the full version of Screaming Frog to make sure you haven't missed anything.
If you've noticed that Screaming Frog crashes while crawling a large website, you might be experiencing memory issues. The spider uses all available RAM, and sometimes it exceeds the amount of memory your computer can provide.
To throttle it and prevent a crash, you need to return to the Spider's configuration menu. Under Advanced, enable the "Pause on high memory usage" option. This will stop the Spider if it consumes more resources than it can handle.
If you find that your crawling is time-limited, it may be because the server cannot handle as many requests as you are sending. To limit the crawl rate, select the Speed submenu in the configuration menu and set a limit for the number of requests that can be made per second.
If you want to use proxies when crawling – for competitive research or to avoid being blocked by bot capture – you need to click on Configuration and then on Proxy. In this menu, you can configure a proxy setup of your choice.
Screaming Frog supports pretty much any type of proxy you might want to use, however, you should make sure it's fast and responsive, otherwise your crawling will probably take forever.
